B E G I N N E R'S M I N D buddhist meditation
G U I D E D M E D I T A T I O N S

These are the meditations that we practice. They are best done regularly, if possible same place and time, everyday rather than intermittently. In this way we build a strong and resiliant meditation 'habit' that begins to include within it everything we might feel. Sadness, anger, loneliness, boredom, pleasure and joy, all become objects of our mindfulness without preference, all become known as the expressions of awareness.

The meditations below may be used as guided meditations, listened to when we sit, or once the method is learnt discarded as we sit in silence, guiding ourselves. We begin and end them with the following aspirations:
Refuge:
I take refuge in the awakened mind
I take refuge in the teachings that point to the awakened mind
I take refuge in the community that practice to recognise the awakened mind

Bodhichitta:
May I be a guard for those who need protection,
A guide for those on the path,
A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood.
May I be a lamp in the darkness,
A resting place for the weary,
A healing medicine for all who are sick,
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles,
And for the boundless multitudes of living beings.
May I bring sustenance and awakening,
Enduring like the earth and sky,
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened.

And on completion a Dedication of the Practice:
By the goodness of this practice may wisdom be attained,
And may conflicted emotions be stilled,
From the ocean of samsara with its stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness and death,
May all sentient beings be freed.
